The next major merge that Verison was a part of was the acquisition of MCI, which was formerly known as WorldCom. This happened just as SBC Communications decided to take AT&T. There were many jobs that were created because of the merge, and there were also long-haul lines that Verison acquired. This means that even though the bulk of Verison's business is concentrated in the East of the United States, they want to provide service to the rest of the country. Before the acquisition of MCI, Verison would have to pay companies like MCI, and including MCI, to use the long haul lines and to make long haul carriers.
